Now available in a special 25th anniversary edition! Discover where it all began—#1 New York Times bestselling author Janet Evanovich’s first “snappily written, fast-paced, and witty” (USA TODAY) novel in the beloved Stephanie Plum series featuring a feisty and funny heroine who “comes roaring in like a blast of very fresh air” (The Washington Post).
Meet Stephanie Plum, a bounty hunter with attitude. In Stephanie’s opinion, toxic waste, rabid drivers, armed schizophrenics, and August heat, humidity, and hydrocarbons are all part of the great adventure of living in Jersey.
She’s a product of the “burg,” a blue-collar pocket of Trenton where houses are attached and narrow, cars are American, windows are clean, and (God forbid you should be late) dinner is served at six.
Out of work and out of money, Stephanie blackmails her bail-bondsman cousin Vinnie into giving her a try as an apprehension agent. Stephanie knows zilch about the job requirements, but she figures her new pal, el-primo bounty hunter Ranger, can teach her what it takes to catch a crook. Her first assignment: nail Joe Morelli, a former vice cop on the run from a charge of murder one. Morelli’s the inamorato who charmed Stephanie out of her virginity at age sixteen. There’s still powerful chemistry between them, so the chase should be interesting…and could also be extremely dangerous.
My Review
I have never read anything by this author until now and I do not regret it for a second. I discovered this series when my local mail carrier delivered my Book Of The Month box to me. We got to discussing the types of books that we read and she recommended the Stephanie Plum Series to me and I am so glad that she did.
Stephanie is a woman who has lost her marriage, her job, and most of her furniture and appliances and is on the brink of losing her apartment. She is not able to find work until her father recommends that she speak with her cousin Vinnie who just so happens to own a bail bonds company. Stephanie has no desire to become a bounty hunter until she learns of the money that can be made. It could solve all of her problems.
She decides to take on a case that involves making $10,000 if she can bring her past flame Joe Morelli who also happens to be a Trenton cop. Stephanie soon learns this bounty hunting thing isn’t for the weak and will take more effort and skill than she was anticipating. She soon finds herself in over her head.
This story kept my attention throughout the entire book. I found myself laughing out loud at the situations that Stephanie found herself in. I was also worried for her a lot of the time. This book is part of a series that I am happy to say I will be continuing on with. I was worried after finishing up the Three Pine Series by Louise Penny that I might not find another good series but this book may have proved me wrong. I am eager to see what Stephanie will get up to in the upcoming books.
