The wise and beleaguered Chief Inspector Armand Gamache returns to Three Pines The Brutal Telling, the fifth book in Louise Penny's #1 New York Times bestselling series.
Chaos is coming, old son. With those words the peace of Three Pines is shattered. Everybody goes to Olivier's Bistro—including a stranger whose murdered body is found on the floor. When Chief Inspector Gamache is called to investigate, he is dismayed to discover that Olivier's story is full of holes. Why are his fingerprints all over the cabin that's uncovered deep in the wilderness, with priceless antiques and the dead man's blood? And what other secrets and layers of lies are buried in the seemingly idyllic village?
Gamache follows a trail of clues and treasures—from first editions of Charlotte's Web and Jane Eyre to a spiderweb with a word mysteriously woven in it—into the woods and across the continent, before returning to Three Pines to confront the truth and the final, brutal telling.

My Review
Ok, first off I absolutely love the Inspector Gamache Series also known as the Three Pine Series. It was this series that got me into mystery novels. Louise Penny has a way of just keeping me on my toes. I tend to read these books through audio and the narrator is Cosham, Ralph. I love his narration I think he does such a great job with each character. I can’t imagine reading these books any other way.
I have grown to love the characters in this small town and have become pretty attached to them. Honestly, the description of this town makes me want to just move there…it makes me giggle because this series has made me want to learn how to speak French. I am happy to say that I have been working on French now for the past month.
So The Brutal Telling is book 5 in the series and this one by far has really stuck with me. We are introduced to new characters and a new inn that is opening in the town. In meeting one of the new characters we also discover some unsavory things about a regular character in this story. The secrets and lies in this story really make you question the characters and what people really are capable of when greed enters the picture. Chaos is coming, old son. Is a line from the book that really describes the story.
I do not want to say too much because I do not want to give anything away in this wonderful story. I will say though that if you love small towns, friendship, a sense of community, mystery, murder, and getting lost in a story then this book is for you. I can honestly say that I am eager to jump into the next book in the series because I need to see if that regular character I spoke of above makes another appearance. I was completely blown away and shocked by what happened in this book. Seriously though pick it up or better yet start at the beginning of the series and get to know the characters and their personalities. This truly was a great read.
