What if your roommate is your soul mate? A joyful, quirky romantic comedy, Beth O'Leary's The Flatshare is a feel-good novel about finding love in the most unexpected of ways.

Tiffy and Leon share an apartment. Tiffy and Leon have never met.

After a bad breakup, Tiffy Moore needs a place to live. Fast. And cheap. But the apartments in her budget have her wondering if astonishingly colored mold on the walls counts as art.

Desperation makes her open minded, so she answers an ad for a flatshare. Leon, a night shift worker, will take the apartment during the day, and Tiffy can have it nights and weekends. He’ll only ever be there when she’s at the office. In fact, they’ll never even have to meet.

Tiffy and Leon start writing each other notes – first about what day is garbage day, and politely establishing what leftovers are up for grabs, and the evergreen question of whether the toilet seat should stay up or down. Even though they are opposites, they soon become friends. And then maybe more.

But falling in love with your roommate is probably a terrible idea...especially if you've never met.

My Review

This book was such a delight to read. I loved getting to know Tiffy and learning about her ex Justin through memories that she had once forgotten. I loved how Tiffy’s friends were always there for her through everything.

Leon was an interesting character to get to know. He is a nurse who works on a hospice unit. He works the night shift and hates change. Leon needs a flatmate to help pay for the flat. He wants someone there who will only be there when he is not. There is one bedroom and one bed meaning that they will have to share the bed. It is absolutely fine though because the way he sees it he works nights and the person renting will work days so they will never be in the flat at the same time. His girlfriend Kay is not keen on the idea but once she puts up her stipulations and takes over then it is fine.

This is the story of Tiffy and Leon the roommates who have never met…or have they? The story revolves around them getting to know one another through post-its. We also witness the growth that Tiffy takes on to recover from her abusive ex Justin the rich guy. Not to mention that we learn about Leon’s brother Richie and let me tell you there is a whole story just in that character. Oh, and there is a super sweet resident in the hospice unit who has a long lost love which Leon decides to take it upon himself to try and find.

If you are looking for a story that you can get swept up in then The Flatshare is for you. Be warned though there are triggers for incarceration, abuse, and dying.
